Once upon a time, there was only one kind of cannabis product most of us knew about: delta-9, better known as the dominant compound in marijuana.
Then, 2018 happened, and CBD products took the market by storm; meanwhile, the Farm Bill cemented hemp as a federally legal substance, and with it, its products such as CBD.
For a time, the market consisted of marijuana and its non-intoxicating, federally legal alternative, CBD–that was it.
And then there was delta-8, and even delta-10.
Surely that’s the extent of our options, in cannabis, right? How could things possibly innovate more?
Then, there was HHC.
Hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol, or HHC for short, is still an incredibly new cannabinoid on the market, but there are already some sellers adding products to their shelves.
And no surprise: HHC gummies are especially popular.
If this is the first time you’ve ever heard of HHC gummies, or even just HHC, you’re not alone!
Here’s what you need to know about HHC gummies for now.

What-is-HHC?
While it’s been widely theorized that HHC is found naturally occurring in trace amounts in cannabis this has still not been substantiated by peer-reviewed research.
So what is HHC, then, and how is it made?
HHC, or hexahydracannabinol, is a cannabinoid that was discovered by chemist Roger Adams in 1944, after he ran delta-9 THC through a process known as hydrogenation.
Currently, any HHC on the market is sourced through THC conversion or some other synthetic process, typically one known as hydrogenation.
Hydrogenation involves adding additional hydrogen atoms to a substance in a lab. Hydrogenated goods are something that many of us encounter on a daily basis, especially if you have a tub of margarine in your fridge; that margarine was actually made and stabilized through hydrogenation.
While hydrogenated products are hardly anything new, it’s still important to remember that this process is nonetheless serious chemistry, and can be dangerous to those who aren’t qualified, or those who lack the necessary equipment.
This is due, in part, to the fact that catalysts are considered “pyrophoric,” which means they readily ignite in certain conditions, thus creating a potential fire hazard.
When making HHC, you typically start with a clean, purified cannabinoid like THC and put it into a reducing environment, which leads to that hydrogenation in the presence of an appropriate solvent and a metal catalyst to improve the efficiency of the reaction.
To better understand hydrogenation, let’s break down the meaning of “delta” in delta-8, “tetra” in tetrahydrocannabinol, and “hexa” in hexahydrocannabinol.
With delta-8 and delta-9 THC, the chemical difference is where the double bond is located on the chain of carbon atoms. So, the “delta” in delta-8 simply refers to the position of where that double bond is located. “Tetra,” however, is the prefix within THC that actually refers to four hydrogens that are partially saturating a ring in the molecule.
When Adams created his first example of synthetic HHC in the 1940s, he did so with delta-9 THC that was sourced from marijuana. These days, however, the HHC is typically derived through a process that begins with industrial hemp, which is naturally low in THC.
Does HHC Get You High?
Even if something might be a little enjoyable, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s intoxicating; take CBD, for example. CBD is, indeed, a non-psychoactive, non-intoxicating substance that users can expect to enjoy while keeping a clear head.
But the question remains: does HHC get you high?
In short, yes–although the high might not be what you’re expecting. Specifically, those experienced with marijuana (in other words, delta-9 THC) might find that they experience a high that’s similar in quality, but not necessarily in intensity.
And while the exact potency difference is still up for debate, most researchers estimate that HHC is either equal to or stronger than delta-8 THC, or about 70-80% as potent as delta-9.
As for the high itself and what it feels like, users typically describe it as euphoric and incredibly relaxing, but not necessarily sedating. In fact, fans of HHC have been quick to mention the boost in mood they experience when trying HHC gummies, which tends to kick in gradually, while allowing users to stay in control of their faculties.
How is HHC Different from THC?
So let’s talk about what sets HHC apart from THC, whether it’s delta-8, delta-9 or delta-10.
As you might have already noticed in discourse surrounding HHC, this fascinating compound bears particular resemblance to delta-8 and delta-9 THC, both in terms of effects and side effects. And while it’s true that this can occur with any of these three cannabinoids, it’s worth mentioning that delta-9 has the strongest reputation for creating adverse reactions, such as anxiety, dry mouth, insomnia, paranoia, and red, glazed-over eyes.
It’s also worth noting that higher doses are typically associated with a higher potential to experience side effects, although delta-9 is the most potent.
And while they share a similar chemical structure, the experience offered by each cannabinoid is unique. HHC has been growing in popularity particularly among academics, intellectuals, creatives, and self-starters, while compounds like delta-8 are generally more beloved for relaxing, leisurely activities.
Perhaps the most important distinction between delta-9 THC and derivatives such as HHC lies in the legal status of products.
HHC and delta 8 THC can be legally sold in 38 states, while that’s the case for delta-9 in only 16 states.
For folks who prefer the effects of marijuana, but live in a state where it’s prohibited, they may have the option to shop for HHC or delta 8 THC instead. That being said, it’s imperative that customers stay in the know about the legal status of HHC in their state before purchasing HHC gummies, or any other kind of cannabinoid product.
What Are HHC Gummies?
If you’re looking for a kind of intoxication that’s mild, but still a bit stronger than delta-8, all wrapped up in a tasty chewy treat, look no further than HHC gummies.
Of course, gummies are nothing new when it comes to cannabis products, but they aren’t a crowd favorite for nothing. Fruity, chewy, and delicious, HHC gummies don’t just make your HHC dosage easier, they make it more fun, too.
HHC gummies are growing in popularity for a number of reasons, one of them being the fact that they tend to stay in the body longer than other products. Another reason is that they’re exceptionally discreet, and can be enjoyed just about anywhere.
Here are some more reasons to enjoy HHC gummies.
Benefits of HHC Gummies
May reduce inflammation
When it comes to general wellness, inflammation is a major point of discussion. And as it turns out, HHC may offer benefits in this regard, by acting as an anti-inflammatory agent.
This is theorized largely because marijuana has been shown to offer relief from inflammation, as shown in studies such as this one. What’s more, though, is that THC is not the only cannabinoid that’s been studied showing these benefits. In one 2009 study, it was observed that cannabinoids influence the inflammatory response by interacting with the CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Boost Your Unwind Time
For many people, cannabis is becoming a staple in their self-care routine, and many more are considering making the addition, whether it’s for sleep, or simply unwinding at the end of the day.
Because of the influence it appears to have on CB1 receptors in the body, HHC has been defined as a psychoactive substance, meaning it can trigger a feeling of intoxication and rush of euphoria, known as a “high.”
And unlike delta-9 THC, HHC has gained a strong reputation for facilitating a sense of relaxation and calm, rather than a stimulating experience. With a more tranquil, clear-headed quality compared to delta-9, HHC is quickly becoming a favorite for relaxation, without passing out on the couch.
May Help With Anxiety
While the exact mechanisms of HHC have still not been fully understood, it’s been theorized that it interacts with our bodies through CB1 receptors in the brain. And through this interaction, it’s believed that this has an influence on serotonin in the brain.
Interestingly, this may indicate that HHC can have an impact on those who experience anxiety disorders, which are heavily associated with serotonin imbalances in the brain.
Pre-Dosed Servings
No matter what kind of HHC product you use, the dosage will have a massive impact on its performance.
There’s a wide variety of different HHC products available, and each one of them needs to be dosed in a different way. But with HHC gummies, everything is already pre-dosed. On top of that, you’ll find that HHC gummies come in consistent shapes and sizes, so you can explore
Ease of Use
Similar to how all HHC products must be dosed differently, it can often feel like each and every product requires an additional item, whether it’s a dropper for oils, a rig for dabbing, carts for vapes, even HHC capsules need a glass of water.
But HHC gummies, the gummies themselves are all you need–the only work needed is to enjoy them!
There’s no need for prep or guesswork, and measuring is as simple as counting out 1-2 gummies.
Great Taste
Hemp has a fairly unique flavor and aroma–nutty and a bit earthy, and some might even describe it as bitter. While some folks quite enjoy the taste, it isn’t for everyone.
With their candy-like flavor and bouncy, chewy texture,HHC gummies simply taste like a sweet treat, creating the perfect alternative for those who prefer something a bit more to their palate.
A Smoke-Free High
Whether it’s a joint or a blunt, smokable THC has garnered a reputation for its fast-acting effects. But with that in mind, smokables aren’t the best-suited for those with a sensitivity to smoke. As a smoke-free way to enjoy the high of THC, delta-10 gummies are especially appealing to those looking to avoid smoke.
Are HHC Gummies Safe?
Not unlike the other cannabinoids that have made their way to the market, the evidence is limited, including when it comes to the safety and side effects of HHC. Consequently, much of the safety information at hand is based on anecdotal evidence.
At this point, preliminary trials have shown HHC to possess a profile similar to THC’s risk and safety, with comparable side effects reported from users who took high doses of THC.
Taking too much HHC may result in adverse reactions such as:
- anxiety
- dry mouth
- paranoia
- elevated heart rate
- dry eyes
Are HHC Gummies Legal?
Not unlike its predecessor delta-8 THC, HHC possesses a legal status that’s not completely clear. Since HHC is ultimately sourced from hemp, many companies argue that HHC gummies are legal through a similar loophole to delta-8.
However, there are also lawmakers arguing that HHC isn’t naturally occurring in hemp. And according to a statement from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), it was said that “all synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols remain Schedule I controlled substances.”
The basis of this argument is that HHC’s legality is mainly centered around whether it’s a natural or synthetic compound.
If HHC is classified as a naturally-derived substance, then it’s legal as long as it’s hemp-derived, and its THC percentage is less than 0.3% delta-9 THC. If HHC is defined as synthroid, then it will be ruled as federally legal until the government decriminalizes or legalizes cannabis on the national level.
That being said, it’s impossible to say it’s 100% legal or illegal until a court offers an opinion on HHC’s legal status. Therefore, use this product at your own responsibility.
How Long Do HHC Gummies Take to Kick in?
Above all else, it’s important to note that the time it takes for HHC to hit the bloodstream is going to have some variation, depending on the individual and their body chemistry, metabolism, and the type of HHC product consumed.
As a general rule of thumb, though, HHC gummies will take around an hour to kick in.
With that being said, customers are strongly advised to proceed with caution when trying any kind of cannabinoid product for the first time, and this includes HHC gummies.
Not unlike THC gummies, it’s still crucial that while the gummies are still metabolizing in your body, you may feel tempted to pop a couple more. This is why we encourage users to wait at least another 2-3 hours before taking more HHC gummies.
How Long Do HHC Gummies Last?
With HHC gummies, users should expect to feel the effects of edibles from anywhere between 2-6 hours, depending on dosage, tolerance, body weight, and other factors.
How Many HHC Gummies Should I Take?
Like any cannabis product, the optimal dosage for HHC gummies will vary with each individual based on a number of different factors including body chemistry, tolerance levels, weight, and metabolism.
Of course, those new to HHC as a whole won’t know their tolerance level until they try it, but users tend to describe it as somewhere between the relaxing high of delta-8 and delta-9 THC.
That being said, the best way to determine your HHC dosage follows the classic wisdom of cannabis: start low, and slowly work your way up.
Now again, everyone’s optimum dosage varies, which also means that your version of a “low dose” might be different from that of your spouse or neighbor. But generally, a lower dose constitutes 10-20 mg, while a medium dose is, for many users, 20-50 mg, with a high dose of 50-100 mg.
What to Look for When Shopping for HHC Gummies
noticeables dirth of HHC gummy retailers with a solid reputation, though more companies are beginning to catch wind.
As with any cannabinoid product, customers are advised to do their due diligence when shopping online for HHC gummies.
But if you’re not entirely sure what a reputable HHC gummies brand looks like, here are some factors to keep an eye out for.
Ingredient Quality
When shopping for HHC and other types of cannabinoid products, one of the key factors to note is the quality of ingredients in their products. HHC gummies made by reputable sellers should be made with quality, reliable ingredients, and won’t contain any weird chemicals or heavy metals that might pose health risks to your body.
Pricing
As you might have already noticed with CBD and THC products, the good stuff is usually on the pricier side. While there are some companies in the industry who strive to make their products as affordable as possible, be wary of the brands that make their HHC gummies suspiciously cheap.
Return Policies
Sometimes, we get a little swept away by the bells and whistles of HHC gummies, especially with details like flavor and color, which are enough to bring out anyone’s inner child.
When we get caught up in these details, it’s easy to forget to check the company’s return policy until it’s necessary–at which point, it may be too late.
When you make sure to check a brand’s return policies before shopping, there’s a better chance of understanding the value these sellers place on their sense of quality, as well as their customers’ satisfaction.
Customer Service
Similar to return policies, great customer service reps can make a huge difference in your overall experience when shopping for HHC gummies.
Brand Reviews
Easily one of the top ways to become acquainted with HHC gummies is by checking out reviews from other customers–not only on their site, but on external forums and review sites, as well. Honest customer reviews can tell you a great deal about HHC gummy sellers–even the information brands might not be marketing. These reviews can inform fellow customers what went wrong in their experience, as well as the positive features that might make the company stand out.
Shopping for HHC Gummies Online
When shopping online for HHC gummies, you have a stronger chance of finding quality products from reputable sellers, all without having to travel to find it. Because HHC is still quite new to the cannabis industry, it’s generally more likely for users to find more established brands online, which normally offer a wide selection of additional cannabis products, as well, such as CBD and delta-8. And if you’re not a fan of the brand’s selection? Simply shop around and check out another website! In short, online shopping makes it much easier for comparing brands and the products they sell.
